How To Prepare Your Job Site For The Arrival Of A Crane

So, you’ve decided to rent a crane from Bryn Thomas Cranes.

First of all, congratulations on a fantastic choice! We have an extensive fleet of cranes at our disposal and can assure you that each one is properly certified, tested and maintained and comes with a competent operator.

Whilst our team will take care of the transportation for you, you must prepare your site for the crane’s arrival – not only for the safety of your workers but for the appropriate usage of the crane itself.

In this post, we’ll share some top tips to help you prepare the job site for the arrival of your hired crane.

Check the job details

Clear communication is key when it comes to crane hire, whether you opt for a Construction Plant Hire Association (CPA) crane hire or contract lift.

It’s also a good idea to consider the terrain where the crane will be positioned upon arrival. This will ensure fewer interruptions on the day.

Remove any obstructions

Once you’ve double-checked the job details, the next step is to clear any impeding equipment.

If the entrance to your site is tight or narrow, please make sure you open the gate as wide as possible – remember, both the crane and vehicle transporting it need to fit through.

Check there are no bumps or potholes in the road leading to your site or on the site itself to ensure your crane can be delivered safely and in one piece.

Assess the terrain and lifting conditions

Some cranes can operate in rough and undulating terrain – but if the path to your site is uneven or on a steep slope, it can cause a problem for our team.

If you know of any hazards (i.e. ditches, drop-offs, unstable ground, overhead power lines, scaffolding or low tree branches), let us know. We might be able to plan an alternative route or can allow extra time to ensure the crane arrives safely at your site.

As well as alerting us to potential hazards, you also need to make sure there is enough space for the vehicle to move around and for our team to assemble the crane as close to the load as possible.

Arrange a site inspection

Before Bryn Thomas Cranes deliver your crane, a pre-inspection should be conducted. This is to review the ground stability, accessibility of your site and the weather conditions throughout your project.

If any issues are flagged up during the inspection, these can be rectified before the crane’s arrival – allowing for a smooth delivery.

The information taken from the survey will also help our experts to plan the lift from start to finish – ensuring every aspect is executed to the highest safety standard and on time.

Put the appropriate safety measures in place

At Bryn Thomas Cranes, we prioritise the safety of our team, cranes and lifting equipment.

By opting for a CPA contract lifting agreement, we can help you to coordinate the safety aspects of your rental by carrying out a risk assessment. However, to ensure the safety of your site workers, you should also keep an eye on the weather conditions. After all, it’s incredibly dangerous to operate a crane in high winds and intense rainfall.

When the crane is on-site, consider putting up visible warning signs so everyone knows to be cautious. Make sure everyone has the appropriate PPE (personal protective equipment) and minimise distractions, too.
