CPA Hire FAQ’s

CPA stands for Construction Plant Hire Association.

The UK plant hire industry is the best established and most professional in the world, and the CPA is the leading trade association for this sector – representing the interests of more than 1,700 members (plant hire firms).

With almost 80 years’ experience in their field, it’s fair to say they know a thing or two about crane hire. But CPA crane hire isn’t the only thing they provide… The CPA:

  • Provides members with a first-class service
  • Is a point of contact for all issues relating to the use of construction plant
  • Meets regularly with Health and Safety Executive (HSE)
  • Provides technical and legal advice and guidance relating to the plant sector
  • Works closely with the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) to offer training and skills
  • Organises the annual Stars of the Future award scheme to recognise and reward outstanding apprentices and trainees in the industry

  • When it comes to crane hire, you have one of two options. You can either opt for CPA crane hire or arrange a CPA contract lift. Whilst there are advantages to both, there are a number of key differences that should help you to determine which option is right for you.

With CPA crane hire (the cheapest option of the two), the crane hire company is responsible for:

  • providing a crane that is properly maintained and in good working condition
  • making sure the crane is tested and certified
  • supplying a crane operator who is fully certified and competent to use CPA cranes

However – unlike contract lifts where every aspect is taken care of on your behalf – the vast majority of the risk and responsibility is on your shoulders. That means you will need to organise the following:

  • a qualified appointed person who has the relevant experience and knowledge to complete the job
  • a qualified signaller/slinger
  • a qualified crane supervisor to oversee the lift

You must make sure that work is carried out in accordance with LOLER 1998 and BS 7121, plan and execute the lift with a safe system of work, and provide all method statements and risk assessments. You’ll need to organise appropriate insurance cover too.

  • The cost of crane hire depends on several factors, including the type and size of the crane, how long you need to hire the crane and if any additional equipment is required.

It’s also worth noting that some (not all) crane hire companies charge a fee to account for the distance travelled to deliver the crane to your site.

But because CPA crane hire isn’t a fully managed service, it tends to work out cheaper than arranging a contract lift – making it an excellent choice if you’re on a budget. However, you will undertake more financial responsibility as you need to make sure that the plant is fully insured, maintained and supervised whilst on your site.

Here at Bryn Thomas Cranes, we offer some of the most competitive rates around for CPA crane hire. So, why not fill in the online enquiry form for a free, no-obligation quote?

Alternatively, if you would like to know more about our CPA cranes, please call 01352 733 984.

With CPA crane hire, the customer (you) is responsible for providing an appointed person who is qualified in all aspects of lifting, as well as a competent signaller/slinger and supervisor to oversee the lift.

Bryn Thomas Cranes simply acts as a reliable extension of your team – providing a suitable crane and experienced operator, so you can do things in your own time and way.

Another important CPA regulation is to ensure you have the necessary insurance cover if things go wrong. This should cover loss of or damage to the plant and equipment whilst it’s on your site, and loss of or damage to the goods being lifted or moved.

CPA crane hire agreements are typically easier to arrange and involve fewer upfront costs, which is ideal if you’re on a limited budget. But you will inevitably undertake more financial responsibility – making sure the plant is fully insured, maintained, and supervised while on your site.

As a rule of thumb, we usually recommend our CPA crane hire options for customers who have hired cranes in the past and have a team on hand, ready to abide by your instructions.

However, if you’d like to know more about our crane hire services, or for help choosing the perfect option for your needs, don’t hesitate to contact us.

Here at Bryn Thomas Cranes, we make the process of arranging a CPA crane hire as straightforward as possible – saving you time and effort.

Before we provide a free, no-obligation quote for crane hire, we highly recommend downloading and reading the CPA model conditions to make sure you’re fully aware of your responsibilities.

Once you’ve found out what’s expected of you (and us), and you’re happy to proceed, give us a call on 01352 733 984.

We will discuss your project requirements in further detail over the phone and offer a fair price for CPA crane hire.

You can also send us an enquiry by filling out our online contact form, and a member of our team will get back to you as soon as possible.
